Default Paint Removal

My car is scheduled to get painted at the end of the month. So, in preparation for the painting, I have removed the bumpers, lights and trim. There was a place on the passenger side door that had two spots of paint knocked off by a shopping buggy. I accidently got the pressure washer too close and made the two spots much bigger. So, being the industrious one I am, I decided to remove all the paint from the door using a razor scraper. It has since went a lot further than I had planed. I almost have all the paint removed. Is there any problem with me doing this? The paint seems to be coming off really easily. The hard part is gonna be on the fender lips and places like this. So far I have about 8-10 hours invested and am enjoying doing this.

What do you guys think about this method of paint removal and what should I use to remove the paint around the fender lips and more difficult areas?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I think it is a great way to remove paint, and body damage is minimal. I used a razor blade on a 67 I used to have, and after sitting in the hot sun for a while the paint came off in sheets. It was as you said "fun".

As for the hard to get places, use the old reliable of hand sanding.

You could use chemical stripper, like Captain Lee's, on areas you can't scrape. There are many opinions on this, but I did my entire car with the stripper and it really wasn't too sloppy. Just put cardboard on the floor where you are working. Good luck.

Scrap, sand, scrap, sand, and then do it again!! :D

This was Oct.

Done and ready for Gel!!

I think the scrapping was the easiest, even with that tough old paint!!

I am doing a 71 convertible at work right now. The car had about 5 paint and primer jobs on it. I used paint stripper to get it down to the last primer coat. I then used lacquer thinner and rags to remove the primer.

The razor blades work great just don't dig into the fiberglass :smash: :smash:
