Has anyone ever had any brake calliper clearance problems with this wheel? I want to go to a 16 or 17" wheel with a big, stupid fat tire....well maybe not stupid, but you get the idea.
The previous posters echo the advice that has been given to me, i.e. the IIs will clear the calipers (see pic) but the modern (post-1989) Ds will require a spacer. I ordered the wheels in late November and expect to have them soon. The proof of the pudding will soon be in the eating! I went with specs as close to original as possible: a 6" wheel with 3 3/8" backspacing and +1/8" offset. They are being custom made by American Racing (AR) to that size.
Paul67, just a great looking look with the torq-thrust wheels, classic muscle car look and my plan is to get a set also and have them on a 62 or 65 vette........
I have 15" TT II wheels on my 73 without spacers. I've not heard of anyone on the forum with 16 or 17" TT IIs having a problem. I went with the 15" wheels as I like the classic look of the smaller wheel and bigger tire.
Red73: Please give specs on your wheels and tires if you can. Backspacing etc. I always heard 15" TT2's would not work without spacer. On my "74 I would like to use with the Radial T/A ( P245/60R-15 ). Thanks in advance.
I have the grey center TT II's (CL305) wheels on my 73. To powder coat the centers took about five weeks. It has been about three years since I installed them and they still look great. You can get the classic look of the original TT's and still have caliper clearance. The wheels are 15x8 with a little less than the original wheel offset, with 255x60 Comp TA tires . I was looking for the 60's muscle car look and quite satisfied how it turned out. The wheels are a little pricey but well worth it. To answer your question, I have about 1/8 of clearance between the caliper and the wheel spokes.
The AR wheels I ordered are the CL205s. I have the tires in the basement (pic). They are 215-70ZR/15s which is the replacement size for 7.75-15. They came in from Tire Rack. The offset on the stock ralleys is +1/16" and the ARs are +1/8" so I think that will be fine as well. My plan was to paint the grey centres with a semi-gloss black caliper heat paint. I had not thought of powdercoating....
AR offers the TT II's with a powder coated grey center (CL305). On first glance most people think they are original TT's. You can check out the wheels at http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/check73.
I bought a set of 17's for my 69 vert when they first came out!!
liked them so much, I ponyed up for two more sets :D
I have had no problem with them at all, in fact they have significantly improved the handling. You have to be careful with them though, A friend of mine put them on his 69. He ran off the road onto the shoulder, hit a pot hole and caved in the rim. :cuss
The consensus seems to be be that the TT IIs clear the calipers. And that was the original question. I will you know how I make out out when the AR wheels arrive. I will fit them in the car where stored. Darn, I wish April was here!
