interior trim question
I am recovering my door panels with a dark gray vinyl (this will match the rest of the interior). I have the deluxe trim and found that the covered piece just behind the door lock plate can be removed. So here is the plan, I want to replace this piece with solid wood, I also want to remove the black insert in the upper door trim and replace it with a 1/4" solid wood piece. My question is which wood should I use, I have walnut (this is my first choice), ash (a little more dense than oak but close to the same look), or oak (I have some that is from an old tree and has a interesting grain). I am just going to apply a satin poly coating with no stain.
