It looks like my transmission problem is related to my shifter. I am going to swap the stock unit out for a Hurst. I was wondering what part numbers I need for the shifter? How easy does it go in? Around what was the average cost of everything?
I have one in my car, but it was installed about 20 years ago, so I can't really help w/ the install. I can't imagine it's all that difficult by looking at everything.
When you buy the Hurst Competion Plus shifter in addition purchase the steel bushing kit also (piece of mind) the shifter comes with plastic bushing that will eventually cause a little sloppiness in the linkage. It's an awesome shifter.
I have a couple of Hurst Comp+ shifters. One is 21 years old and great and the other is a brand new one I bough last summer. The quality is not what it once was. The shift plates for the linkage were very sloppy with about .080" gap in them. I returned it for a second one, that one was worse. I shipped it back to the Hurst center in NV,(at my expense), they said it was within spec and didn't do anything to it. Wasted almost a month. I worked on it in my shop and closed the gap. It works now but I should not have to tweak a new $240 shifter. I think I still have pictures on file of the gaps. They do work better then the crappy stock Muncie frame mounted shifter I had.

I just sold the Hurst out of my car. It was 3 years old with not many miles. It had the Corvette shifter on it which looks much better and does not stick up so high. I think I paid about 320 for everything new.
The best deal I have found is from JEGs. You will need to buy the corvette look alike shift lever to put on top from Ecklers as well.
Here are the numbers and price:
(for a Muncie - Check JEGS for other applications)
FROM JEGS
Hurst Shifter
Item: 530-391-7992 (Hurst number is 391-7992)
Cost $165.99
Hurst Shifter Install Kit (you need this as well)
Item: 530-373-8611 (Hurst number 373-8611)
Cost $89.99
From Ecklers
Covette Style Shifter (looks like it has revers lockout but fake) to fit on the hurst shifter
Part Number: 26836
Cost: $92.99
You can buy the shifter and install kit from ecklers but it is $100 dearer ($349 for both).
I am looking to buy one interested in drumming up a group purchase?
The slop can be eliminated by adding steel washers during the install process. There was an article in a Chevy magazine not too long ago that talks about how to do that.
I bought the shifter and the install kit form Jegs. I put it in about three years ago. Its not that hard just follow the directions. I was a little disapointed at first but the more I used it the better it got (there is a little break in peroid. I love it now I would not use anything else.

Re: Who has a Hurst shifter?? (Sigforty)
Had a Hurst Competition Plus when I bought my '70. I got a new one ready when I swap in the new engine & tranny. :yesnod: I'm using the T-bar handle I've had since my first '67 Fomula 400 Firebird.
I have a Hurst Competition Plus with a mid-year round "bolt-on" stock style stick and chrome ball (gives a shorter/quicker throw than the 68-up "bolt-on" stick.) The NCRS guys all have to let me know that I need a black shift ****, that just usually causes me to do a burnout when I leave! the show. The stock shifter is an OK part but, I don't like the shifter mounted to the crossmember and the tranny linkage being "toqued" when I do my 2500-3000 RPM drag launches! The Hurst shifter being directly mounted to the transmission tailhousing will have a slight vibration while crusing down the road, I can live with that, blown up M-22's get expensive! That I can't live with! :yesnod:
