I didn't use that cam, but I did use the Comp 270H. I put it in a 396 with 10.25 CR, stock heads oval port (with port work), headers, RPM intake & Holley 780, and it has a noticable rumble at idle, and VERY responsive!!!! I'm very happy with the cam I chose. If your using it in a 467 I'm sure the 274 would be about the same as the 270 in my smaller 396.

467 Ratman:
Will you be running the Merlin heads in your signature? If so, the XE274 is too small IMO. I don't really understand changing from the 296-2 Crane cam which was 296/306 advertised duration and .553"/.571" lift to a 274XE that is 274/286 advertised duration and .552"/.555" lift. Why are you going with such low lift cams? Those heads you have flow well to around .600" lift. Why not go with a mechanical solid flat tappet...maybe something around 248-260 duration @ .050" and around .600"-.630" lift (Depending on how wild you want to get).

I ran the Comp Cams 294S (248 duration @ .050" and .595"/.595" lift) solid flat tappet in my Oval Port motor and it pulled like crazy to 6500RPMs....and was still a VERY streetable cam. I was planning on changing to a 306S solid flat tappet before I decided to switch to a 572 big block. With those heads I'd be running a solid flat tappet for sure. It just seems like you are mismatching parts to me.

It all depends on the individual taste for cams, but I'd go much bigger than the 274.I run a 406 with a Comp XE-284/1.60 rockers and it still will idle at 650 rpms with lots of rumpity rump.Next round I may go solid myself, and actualy have concidered the 294S mentioned earlier.

467-Ratman,

I have this cam.... BUT, I still haven't dialed in the motor yet, so I can't give you much of an impression. I also need to redo my exhaust. It does pull like a raped ape with 3.08's.....

I don't think this cam is that much different than your Crane (more duration on the Crane at 236 degrees). I like the cam if I can get the air/fuel mixture right.....

Bob

Shane, Thanks for the input on the cam, my goal was to get a new cam that is little more tame. Sounds like it would be a mismatch to my heads though. What is the advantage with the solid flat tappet design over hydraulic? I always heard that the solid style was a pain in the but because of having to adjust them . I really do like my existing cam, but was looking for something that started earlier in the rpm band. Maybe my problem is something else, ie: headers , intake or what ever......

A solid cam first has steaper ramps which will heps w/ revs, but it's claim to fame is that you don't have valve float. With a flat tappet hydraulic after 6,000 rpms+ your lifters begin to "pump up" with oil and will float your valves limiting rpm. With a solid you engine will virtually rev up until the engine destroys itself. Solids require more maintance, but w/ poly locks on a car that only sees a weekend duty you may have to adjust the valves once a year.
