Poor mans air conditioning.
This was something that GM did on Camaros and Corvettes.
Its bascially a way to get fresh air into the cockpit through vents.
Flow through ventilation. The previous models did not have a "flow through" system for fresh air. If you wanted fresh air from the heater/vent you had to run the fan or open a window.
With astro ventilation there is a vent at the rear of the cabin which allows air to exit the cabin through the vents in the rear deck.
The flow through ventilation was only hooked up on non-A/C cars. If there wasn't an A/C then there were a couple of vacuum actuators in the back of the car that opened up and flowed air out through the grills on the back deck.

The side vent arms don't have anything to do with the astro ventillation (AV). The AV vents should be open in the AIR position, and closed in the recirculation postion.
Notice also, there is no "off" setting on the fan. It runs continuously when the car is running, thus providing you with comfortable, mountain-meadow fresh, flow-through ventillation... :D

Re: ASTRO Ventilation? (wackedvette)
The only time the Astro Vents close is when you turn the temperature dial up. Otherwise if no heat/temp is dialed in the Astro Vents are open. Only the temp side of the heater control makes the Astro Vent doors open or close.
Hey Z-Man-
I'm not sure where Foxfiled is, but here in the Denver area, I dont get a good wiff of the Mt's in my '69 until I'm north on I-25... or West 6th Ave.. :auto:
I'm looking at completely removing the heater and possibly the fan in my '69, has anyone done a manual control of some type for the rear deck vents? Also if the fan is off does the system have any flow at normal driving speeds?

I was trying to envision what the Corvette ads would have been saying in the late '60s and early '70s. :)
On '68's there is no actuator on non A/C cars. Just a flap which opens under positive pressure in the cabin.
Unsure of A/C cars in '68.
I believe the actuator was introduced in '69.(for non A/C cars anyway)
Another '68 only thing!

They are to get the fresh air in.
The astro ventilation is to get the air out of the cabin. If there is nowhere for the air to flow to, a positive pressure builds up in the cabin and no fresh air can flow into the cabin.

James,my astro vent rear deck positively air pressure activated black flap makes an almost infinitesimal difference to my convertible(esp with the roof down).....given all the airleaks i have with the roof up it probably would never work as designed so i have just left it open......john :chevy
