I was talking to trick flow about their engine kits. With the setup I have now (400cid, flat top pistons, 10.1 compression ratio), he said im good to go with any of the kits that have the 72cc heads. The only thing he said to worry about are the stock rods. With the 500hp package it will be very hard on those rods. So my question is, how many horses could the stock rods in my setup handle?
Im getting to the point where im thinking about pulling this block out. BECAUSE:
A) Easier to work with
B) More possibilities
C) Easier to "Dress Up" and make it look pretty
D) More possibilities
E) More possibilities
The 400 rods are shorter than the standard 5.7 inch Chevy rod. I would not touch a set of stock 400 rods for any type of performance engine. The 5.7 inch rods are better but a 6 inch rod really helps the rod/stroke angle of the SBC. The strength is not the issue but the extreme rod angle is tough on the rods as you get up in the RPMs.
Awesome! So i will be okay with the stock rods!? ...As long as i dont beat on the engine, im good?
Hmmm, you want a 500 hp eng but won't beat on it? :skep: You should be able to find some reconditioned GM 5.7 rods with ARP bolts, assuming you are getting some new pistons so why not spend $100 or so and get some better rods?

Can i change the pistons without removing the block? I was just going to use the orginal pistons and rods. The pistons are nice an black, the way they should look. I want to do this right. If i could get away with using stock pistons and rods (that are in good shape), then why not?
Ohh when i say beat, i mean consistantly beating on it. :boxing:
If you are going to leave the short block as is then go with a set up that has a cam with about 220 degrees of duration at .050 lift, with your 400 this should make all your power below 5000 rpm's and I would think would be OK (not optimal) with a stock 400 short block. RPM's are what is hard on rods and pistons.
Sounds like a grenade motor to me. I would stick with a small cam and be happy with 300-350 horse power. Also are the heads aluminum? The compression might be on the high side for a steel head.
You can do it without pulling the engine but why. Pulling an engine is a very easy process. Much easier than trying to put in pistons and rods in and engine that is still in the car. I have pulled dozens of engines and would not hesitate to pull an engine out of anything. It is so much easier to work on out of the car. If you are pulling or replacing pistons you should have it at least honed. This should be done at a machine shop. Yank it out! :jester
Gordonm is correct! :iagree: He helped me pull my engine several weeks ago and it was very easy, and the engine was broken down and inspected within 2 hours. I was ready to install alot of stuff while the engine was in the car, :nono: that would of been a dumb move........ :seeya
I dont have a stand or a hoist for the block. They arn't cheap. I dont know anyone who owns one..... That's my main reason for not pulling it out. From what you guys are saying, maybe i should start investing in one.
They are not too expensive. but if you wanted to pull it most tool rental companys rent them. Maybe this would be the better route if you don't plan on doing this but once.
It would be next to impossible to pull the rods with the block in the car.
The crossmember would be in the way and it would be awful dirty (dirt is murder on new bearings)
Pull the motor you would be happier and so would your motor
Try and find someone who has a stand. I would loan you mine but you are to far. Rent and engine hoist for a day and pull it. It would be much easier with it out.
Oaky.... I found someone to lend me a hoist, so i guess ill dish out the 60 bucks for a stand. Since I'm pulling the engine out, I'm going to stroke it, because that's what I orginally wanted to do.
I'm still young, and I've already caught on to how things work: Dish out the extra money in the beginning, do it right, and you are going to get better results than expected.
