HAVE A THM 350 TRANNY. I WILL HAVE HAD THE VETTE FOR FOUR YEARS THIS APRIL. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR THREE YEARS. I WISH TO CHANGE THE TRANNY FLUID. IS THIS A GOOD IDEA, SINCE I HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE LAST TIME THE FLUID WAS CHANGED. I REBUILT THE ENGINE AND IT HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN. I KNOW TRANNY FLUID HAS VERY GOOD DETERGENT PROPERTIES (ESPECIALLY NEW) BY CHANGING THIS WILL IT BE BAD FOR THE TRANNY?
don't worry about it. Just drive it or at least start it once in a while to keep everything lubricated. Your cylinder walls are gonna rust if you dont.
A fluid change of the pan oil won't hurt, but that's only 2-1/2 quarts of a total 10 quarts in the transmission. If you want to really change all the fluid, take it to a shop that offers transmission flushing service. They'll pump the old fluid out and replace it on the fly with new fluid. This isn't really cheap to do, most places charge $75-110 for the service, but it does get all the old fluid out of the system.
After you've had it flushed get them to drop the pan and replace the filter and pan gasket.
I know this sounds a little extreme, but it is one way of getting perfectly new fluid into your tranny.
One trick that will "snap" up your shifts without installing a shift kit is to use Ford Type "F" ATF. It won't hurt the TH350, but it does have more friction modifiers that will increase the firmness of gear shifts. "Trick Shift" and "Slick Shift" type transmission fluids sold by B&M and other transmission speciality places are basically selling Type "F" fluid to increase the firmness of shifts.
Here's what happened to me.
I changed the fluid and filter for first time about 2 years ago. Tranny was working fine until then and for about 2 months after. Then it all went to h---. Had to get a rebuild which was a good thing, I guess.
Could have just been a coincidence, I don't know!

Probably coincidence. ATF should be part of regular maintenance and should be replaced. Go ahead and replace with new. If possible get the entire system flushed...
