Default TOWING/ STRAP LOCATION

I am going to tow my 72 on a u haul car trailor tomorrow to NC. The front straps i am going to strap to the lower control arms in the front. Where is the best place to strap it in the back? I hate to put it around the half shafts or the leaf spring.

Thanks
Eric

The best place to tow your vette are on the spindle struts at the rear and the frame crossmember and the lower control arm at the front.

These are the best for any vette.

Becareful not to damage your driveshaft. :nonod:

Have a safe ride.

Uhm, I don't know what kind of auto transport you are using. But, the U-Haul auto transports I've used several times in the past had straps that went over the tires. I would not trust them to go over a body part which is not touching the ground because the point where the strap is connected to the car and the points where the strap ties to the bed of the transport form lever arms, and it is best that both lever arms be under constant tension and as short as possible. By wrapping around a tire the lever arms will be the distance between where the strap leaves the tire and the point on the bed where the strap is connected...which is like around 5" at most and the entire strap will be under constant tension, plus the friction between the strap and the tire is very high so the strap will not slip. But, the strap will slip on metal parts, and will have long lever arms of at least a foot and a half if the picture in my mind is correct, or if you tie it off onto a part on the car then at least one end of the strap will be slack while the other will be holding up all of the force during the jostling of the move.

Forgive me if I'm way off on this. The U-Haul facility that rented you the auto transport are supposed to show you how to secure a vehicle.

I havent picked the trailor up yet. They might show one how to use it though. I am not even sure what kind of straps they come with. Wheather it is tire straps or under car straps. Eric

The one I rented had straps that went over the tire too. Hauled it 550 miles with no problems, even after hitting a deer with the U-Haul.

Connecting straps to the tires is the best way to secure the car. When not possible, the only other location to use as an anchor point is the frame. I personnally would never trust secureing the car using the control arms. They were not designed for this purpose and not strong enough in the event of a mishap. There is also the possiblity that they are damaged in the move as well.

As above, whereever you rent from, have them show you. That is part of their job.

I got the u haul yesterday it did have the front end straps. It also had 1 back up chain in the fron and back. I hooked it to the control arm in the front and the frame in the rear since it was not adjustable and short. It worked out good though. The trailor has automatic hydralic brakes too which i have never seen. It works off of force of stoping. Today we are towing the camaro. Thanks to all who have responded. Eric :hurray: :auto:
