Pulled my differential not long ago. ('79 L82 with a 3.73?)Noticed that the driver side yolk had a lot of in/out play in it.... substantially more than the passenger side. It moves in/out around 3/8" or so. Drained it and cracked it open. Looks like the end of that same yolk (spline end, internally) might be worn a bit. The splines themselves are okay... just the very end may have worn some... I assume from rubbing on that center cylinder. Additionally, the clip is disintegrated.
Been looking for a shop to check it out. Anyone have any ideas what would cause the spline end to wear like that? Also, anything else I should have checked out while I'm having it serviced? Thanks.
You'll need new yokes. Many places such as Van Steel sell new yokes with hardened tips. Vette yokes have been known to wear down over the years.
Also, now that the clip is gone, its probably been ground up in the case. Either way youre going to be looking at at least $400 for the rebuild and $100 to $200 for new yokes.
