Default water temp gauge not working

OK, i got ready to drive her into work this morning and i noticed the water temp gauge was leaning all the way on the right side and not moving at all.! Does this mean i have a bad guage?? She never run hot before( new ZZ4) and i cetainly dont want her to overheat. How does one trouble shoot this, or should i get a new gauge??
thanks in advance.

I would check to see if the gauage is hooked up. the connecter may be coming loose and causing a bad reading. How old is the sender? If it is newer it could be off. I had a brand new NAPA sender read over 50 degrees hotter than the car was.

If the gauge is pegged hot, look for a short to ground. Start by pulling the lead right where it hooks to the sending unit, if the gauge goes all the way to cold, you have a bad sending unit. If it stays pegged hot, you have a short some where in that wire to ground

:iagree: The sending unit in the motor just makes ground. The hotter the engine, the more ground the unit sends to the guage. If the wire is shorted somewhere, then it's sending mucho ground to the guage. I'm betting that the wire running to your temp sending unit has fallen off and is touching the frame or motor.
