Water pump, guy at the local parts shop says I have a long water pump.
So 's I order a long one from summit w/ a new pulley.
Well the darn thing is to long, has more clearance tween it and the timeing chain cover........so I've "lied" and said mine is long ?
the new pully appears to be the same depth as old one.
anyone know the height off the block for the long and short of it ?
71 - 82 SBC Corvettes used a short style water pump, but they had a stouter 3/4" shaft compared to the standard 5/8" shafts on other small blocks of the same period.
I believe a standard short style pump will work as long as you get a pulley that matches the diameter of the water pump shaft.
the exact measurement block to pulley mounting surface for 1971-1982 Corvettes is supposedly 5.90 inches and small-block short legs 1955-1970 thru 1968 all others are 5.625 inches. I personally took my water pump off my small block and tried to replace it with a standard short water pump, as was mantioned the centering shaft on the Corvette water pump is a larger diamater. the length is also a little longer I am assuming the diffearance between 5.80 inches and 5.625 inches because my pulley hit the water pump housing and my fan was brought back far enought towards the motor that it hit the power steering pump. Along chevy pump is 6.90 inches long so the way I understand this whole situation is GM made two different short pumps. I hope this helps
