OK, I am planning to build up a motor this summer and though I would as you alls opinion: 350 stoked to 383 or 427 bb, either will be hot street in 70 with m21 and 3.70 gears. Give me your thoughts :D
This way you don't have to do the BBC conversion but can still say you have that magic 427ci...
Of course nothing is as cool as a real BBC 427!!...Can't go wrong either way!...Choose whatever makes YOU happy!...Or at lease what makes your wallet happy!...*LOL*...
My vote is for a stroked SB but if you do go big block don't go for a small 427 BB at least go 454 preferebly a 502. They will make more power for the same money

Re: which engine sb vs bb (foundvettelifeisgood)
I can't believe Len hasn't chimed in yet.
If you've got the $$ go with one of the Hi performance crate engines. I couldn't afford a large cash layout and don't like using credit cards. Cash & carry allowed me to afford my BB. It's still not in the Vette yet but I'm getting closer!
IMHO, a 383 with proper induction, exhaust and gearing will give you all the HP and Trq you can use safely on the street without the weight and gas mileage penalties of a BB.
If you currently have a SB, you can use all brackets, etc. BB will require all diff brackets.
Go 383 and use the savings from BB for other performance upgrades: HEI, brakes, 17" wheels, alum radiator, elect fans, fuel injection, etc, etc.
On the other hand, if you have a bonafide LT-1, consider a restoration to OE/NCRS specs. This will hold or increase in value. Major mods as above will not.
personal choice, they each have their definate strenghts and weaknesses, I opted for a 383 stroker when I built mine up over a bb for a number of reasons, it's not that I don't like bb but for what I want out of an engine a stroker met my criteria. That being said - I plan on doing a body off in 2 years and replacing the #'s engine with a Z06 engine F.I. and 5 sp.
If you can afford it, consider the ZZ502.
502 HP, 567 ft/lb of TQ, a mild cam for low maintainence, and will run on ANY gas (9.7:1 CR), with a warranty from GM, and BB parts for the C3 are still available.
Two cubic-inches too-big for NHRA Pro-Stock, for sheer 'WOW'-factor, it'd be tough to beat. With .030" over-bore and 1/4" stroker-crank, future rebuilds could reach 540".
It might-not out-run a Z06, but it'll SURE make the C5-crowd 'think' twice about it!!!
I don't know if you'll get the answer your looking for, because I bet the results will be equally split between SB and BB.
Having said that, when I was at the Barrett-Jackson auction the other day, I always found myself wandering towards all of the cars with BB. There is something mesmerizing about a BB. The 427 has always been my favorite.
Overall, SB are lighter and can also generate some serious horsepower and torque. I think that 427 small block is a cool motor. But its pricey. The 383 stroker from AR is very popular along with the GM crate engines. Such as the Fastburn.
But as others have mentioned it all depends on your budget and what you are trying to accomplish.
For use in a 70 LT1, I would stay true to the original design of the car but put in a modern (1992 - 1996 vette engine) LT1. With heads and cam you can get major power out of the LT1 and it is a great modern engine. Install may be a bit tricky, but you keep the stock hood with the "LT-1" stickers... :) One of my "dream" projects, actually.
My bigblock dream projects include building an engine starting with the all-aluminum ZL1 block ($5k to start for the bare block! ) and I am wondering what hood the new 572 ci 600++ hp crate engine will fit under... I don't think any stock vette hood.. that one is around $13k for the complete engine. MJ
Just to clarify, it is original LT-1, matching numbers on everything etc., that motor will go to storage as will stock trans and rear end. I have a L-88 427 short block in storage, I know ncrs guys (I am one  ) but I don't want to buy another car and want to go faster :D , limited budget but do have many items or access to some things already. I won't ruin car, just modify for me, also plan tremmec 5 speed or 6 speed. :D
