I pulled the tach/speedo board last night and went to change all the bulbs. However, one of the 'holes' did not have a bulb in it. I was wondering if it was necessary to have a bulb in there or not. Here is a picture below of what I'm talking about. I copied this picture off eBay... the hole in question I highlighted in a yellow circle.
Re: Tach/Speedo Printed Circuit - help needed (wombvette)
Don't know about those, but some cars have empty bulb slots for options they don't have (alarm, low fuel level, ride levelling, etc). If you look through the hole and don't see an indicator, it is probably for back-lighting and can be replaced.

If I remember correctly --- I think there is a choke circuit ? , or something like that , where half the cars didn't have it and didn't need the bulb. Check the wiring diagram to see for sure ! Rick

As said above, it could be that the bulb wasn't fitted at the factory. If not, it could be that it blew years ago and somebody took it out & never replaced it. Mine had 3 bulbs missing from that circuit when I bought it. I suspect that it's because it's fairly easy to get a bulb out without dismantling anything, but it's a lot more tricky getting one back in - especially if you've got "sausage fingers" :)
If you've got that printed circuit out it's always a good idea to check out the continuity of the tracks with an AVO.

Mine is the same way. If you look at the board the contacts for that bulb around the hole are not exposed so no voltage would get to the bulb anyway. Also if you look at the face of the tach, there is no indicator for a bulb to light up. There must have been some option for certain years or models for that location.

Looks to be either the choke light or one of the backlight illumination bulbs.
Does your choke light work?
Follow the tracks round the board - if that missing bulb shares a positive track with the rest, or any, of the other illumination bulbs, then you know it should be one too.
