Default Body alignment with gas cap

Okay, here is my problem. I dropped the body back on the frame. I spent the next few weeks playing with the body mount shims, which I now am happy with. My only concern is the placement of the gas cap in the opening. I cannot remember where the cap should be located under the lid; presently mine is centered side/side, but not front/back; it is closer to the back. Is this right? The body is aligned to the frame at the holes in the rocker channels on each side, these are the holes that are in both the frame and body for alignment. At the front, my upper control arms are about 1/2" away from the innner fender at the leading edge, so moving the body back would cause the inner fender to hit the control arm at this point. Anyone have a pic of thier gas cap in relation to the opening?

I think that sounds correct.
An easy way to tell is that the rubber piece that sits around the opening of the tank is not perfectly round its off set.
I would take a look at that if you have one and see how it fits on.
This should give you and idea of how things are going to fit.
I would think if your body mounts are all in place and they lined up good you should be ok.

I've got 2 '72s. One has a replace tank ( from Quanta ) and it looks exactly like that. The other '72, with an original tank, is much more centered in the filler hole. I think the tank is wrong. Do you have a replacement tank, or is it the original ???

Mine looks exactly like that. Don't know if it's the original tank or not but I think so. I would like to have it centered though, the gas cap would be easier to remove if it wasn't as close to the egde of the body.

I havent done this in a long time, but my memory tells me that the tank can be moved around on the frame to make the cap line up with the filler hole.

Okay, I guess then it is fine, seeing as some of you have it in the same place as I do. It is a replacement tank, and I measured every possible dimension between old and new before I put it in, and they were identical in every way and detail. Ed, I do not think there is any room for adjustment on the tank itself, but I will however double check that tonight, thanks for the idea.
