On the way home yesterday, my speedometer went from somewhere around 85 to 0. It bounced a few times, which was amusing, but its now dead.

I know I likely have to replug something back into something, but is that something a mechanic should do or is it an easy fix?

The meter has been bouncing a little for a while, so I knew something was going to happen.

81 Vette btw.

Sounds like the speedo cable snapped to me. You have a two piece cable if you have cruise control and a one piece if you don't. It is not too much trouble to replace.

:iagree: not a horrible job. Getting under the dash can be a pain, but not impossible. If it is the lower cable and you have cruise, make sure the transducer still turns. They can lock up and break the cable.
