I assume you are talking about the T&T steering column with steering wheel.

The first thing that you need to know is that the 1976 T&T steering column is identical to the 1969 through 1975 columns. The basic difference is in the steering wheel, attaching hardware, and telescope lock. The 1976 steering wheel and hub is one piece. All other Corvettes (1969-1975 and 1977-1982) have the steering wheel and hubs separate.

So if you obtain a thin rim steering wheel from a 69-75 Vette, you will need all of the attaching hardware and the telescope lock. It will bolt right in.

If you obtain a 1977-82 steering wheel and attaching hardware you will find that everything bolts right in except that the extension that extends down from the bottom of the steering wheel will be just a bit short in length. The extension covers the gap between the bottom of the steering wheel and the top of the steering column when the steering shaft is telescoped rearward in the car. You will find that there will be a slight gap if the steering wheel is telescoped all the way rearward. Most people think that the steering wheel is too close anyway. So you probably will never have it in the rearmost positions. The extension that comes with the 1976 steering wheel will not work with any of the other C3 steering wheels.

The following are scans of three AIM sheets for the 1969-75; 1976; and the 1977-82 steering wheels, attaching hardware, and telescope locks.

Jim-
Thanks for the info. My wheel is always pulled out as far as it can be since I am so little. I would like to get a 75 steering wheel but I guess I just wanna see what really needs to be done to complete that task. :smash:

I had a brand new 1976 Corvette back in the old days. Just as soon as the 1977 models came out with the leather wrapped steering wheel on the T&T column, I had to update my 76. It was very easy.

You will have to purchase the following for a T&T column to install a 1977-82 leather wrapped steering wheel:

Hub - 3949110 - no longer available from GM
Extension - 458910 - no longer available from GM
Steering Wheel - various suppliers
Screw (6) 9428089 Zip Products ZSC-351
Spacer 348325 ZipProducts calls this Stand/Spacer SC-394
Lever 459083 DocRebuild calls it Tele Lock Ring 2821214
Upper Contact Asm 3949103 Zip Products calls this Stand/Contact SC-45
Screw (3) 3949107 Zip Products SC-644
Retainer 3945459 Zip Products SC-370
Emblem 458909 Zip Products SC-371
Cap 459082 Zip Products SC-370

The hub and extension are two critical parts that are required to adapt the 1969-75 and 1977-82 steering wheels to the 1976 column. I just spent quite a bit of time researching Paragon, Eckler's, Zip Products, Dr Rebuild, and Corvette Steering Service. I can't find either part.

Zip Products catalogue says that they have a 69-75 Hub Cover SC-680 which I believe is what the AIM book calls the extension. But I am quite sure that it will not fit the 1977-82 steering wheel.

I thought that I heard somewhere that the hub was being tooled up somewhere. But I can't find it today.
