Hey Stew,
They should be 882 castings. If I remember correctly the L82 heads were also 882 castings but with bigger valves. I had my 882s punched out for the bigger valves and a bowl blend done along with a valve job. They ran pretty well, but I got greedy and ponied up for the AFR 195 heads. I never ran the 882 heads at the track so I don't have a good baseline, but it was definitely fast just with the upgraded 882s. If you check Chevy Hi Performance's head flow data they kind of bag on the 882, I guess it depends on what you really want from the car. FYI I had my heads done for about $250, the AFRs are $1250.
Take care,
Jeff
Thanks for the info Jeff.
I am trying to find a set of 041's or 186's with the big valves. I have also heard that our stock ones are dogs. I'd be in devorce court If I buy AFR's etc so I am looking for heads in the bargain arena.
One thing to think about. If you buy used heads how much is it going to cost you for the heads, new valves, springs, retainers, rockers, etc. that you might need to get to bring the heads up to par. If all that totals less than new heads then OK, but if not, then all the work to save a couple of bucks is not worth it.
If you can do all the head work yourself you can get the parts to make a like new set for about 1/2 the cost of new heads. Just don't use a spring rate that's going to kill your cam if you don't change that. After all, your cam, if original, now has a lot of miles on it too.
(OOPS sorry, didn't notice your sig about the new cam)
:iagree: Wit hall the work that is needed on these old heads you are almost ahead of the game going with a good set of new heads. Plus they flow much better than the old castings. Get all the costs of rebuilding the old heads then the cost of new heads and show it to your wife. You will have more HP also. Tell her aluminum is lighter than iron and you will save gas by going to aluminum heads so you are saving money in the long run :jester

They used to advertize Chevy used heads with SS valves and pocket ported for cheap but haven't talked with them for a couple of years. Thier pocket porting was cheap and really looked good on my WP torquers. I was so impressed that I would have to recommed them to anyone. My torquers where painted and shipped for free too. Just insist on umbrella valve seals or you'll get stock O-rings only. Ask, they may take trade-ins?
Let us know what they say Stew. :yesnod:
