I tryed to do my homework before asking, looking under archives, but was not coming up ! My first step is to know where to mount the box(on a '80) ! If you've got pictures that would be a great help. Thxxxxxxxx
However, the mounting locations are limited only by aesthetics, I guess, and how much wiring you want to run.
Some people have them under the passenger dash in the cockpit. Others have put them inside the windshield washer gutter. Others have put them on the firewall. Still others, like me, have put them inside one of the wheel wells.
It's all really up to you. Just remember the MSD wants a direct battery connection for power and ground. The next best place to do that, aside from the battery, is at the starter.
I mounted mine inside the passenger side fender on the wheel well. For my 71 all I have to do to get to it is remove the side grill on the car. I ran the ground to the ground on the engine block, and got my power from the starter. The wires just routed to reach the coil, distributor and switched 12 volts. I believe the longest attachment I had to make was 6-8 inches to have some slack in the lines for the coil.
I was worried about heat and moisture so I decided to install inside the car. I mounted it high on my passenger footwell, it out of sight, yet I still have access.
I have an MSD 6al and mounted the box above the passenger front wheel. It is a bit hidden to be a little out of sight for those who like the more original stock look. Of course the big red MSD distibutor kinda throughs that out. I have good access to it there and I like it out of the way too.
