WHat is the best way to go about detailing the engine. Can I just spray simple green or degreaser onto the engine and then hose it off? This is probably another one of those "i AM STUPID" QUESTIONS
Pull it out (the engine  ) :lolg: Simple Green uncut is fine then hose ot off and wipe it down. Gunk is good and has that "clean chemical" smell :D Grease Lighning is also good. Whatever you use, use at full strength.
Looking at your profile I see now you are new to this. That's OK. Hosing the engine down with a hose is OK but it does take some "common sense". Certain places you can use more pressure ( around the main crossmember & cntol arms) and some places be careful ( around the distributor & carb) If your careful you DO NOT have to bag up the carb. or distributor. But just a little hint... The more careful you are the easier the clean up will be.
I think a good place to start, is at the coin op car wash. I take a can of Gunk Engine Cleaner with me, and I start there. That way, most of the crap goes on someone elses property.
Once the bulk of the garbage is off, I take the car home and do the detail stuff. A jar of mineral spirits and a toothbrush works great. It will cut right through grease.
As others have pointed out, be careful of the carb and the distributor. Also, you really don't want to douse a hot engine with water. Try to stay away from the cylinder heads. Over spray or light spray is not a problem (othewise, how would we be able to drive in the rain?).
