1998 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 6cyl. Should the ac compressor cycle on and off during cold weather or is there a sensor that prevents it from operating below a certian outside temp? I thought that the compresor should cycle with the selector in defrost posistion to help dry the air and defrost the windshield. At one point my compressor was cycling in the defrost position during cold weather but now its not. Im trying to figure out is theres a problem or not. Does anyone have any good links to internet sources that help describe the function of and diagnosis of automotive ac systems? Thanks for any help provided.
most do in defrost mode.. if to cold outside the low-limit switch sould keep
from kicking in (I THINK) if real cold run till hot ,turn off. then open hood,
watch (controls in off also) compressor have some start, then turn on defrost
it may only kick for a short time, (if real cold)
It's normal for it to do that. In reallly cold weather the A/C is acually working as a moisture control in conjunction with the heater, so the compressor which is going to lower the air coming out of the dash to 40 degrees is in fact warming the air somewhat if it like 10 degrees outside. :iagree:
