I just bought an 80 and it has some cracks in the paint. It's not bad its pretty much just the front of the car, but i want it to look fresh so i think i'm just going to have the whole thing repainted. Any ideas on how much it would cost for a decent paint job. I'm in the akron ohio are if anyone knows a good place
$5k seems to be the average here, also. If you bring the car in already stripped/prepped, the price drops to $2.5k. If you screw-up the stripping/prepping, price goes back up to $5k.
Thanks GDaina. If i paint it myself i would have to wait a little while we are building a garage in front of our old garage so there is no where to do it for at least a couple months. How long would painting take from start to finish?
Week stripping the car, working evenings, few days to a week repairing any glass damage, if there are any, evening to mask and spray catalyst primer, week to block sand if you choose to block sand, whole day to apply paint...a month sitting in sun to dry and evaporate solvents and allow for any paint shrinkage...this is applying laquer. If you choose to use BC/CC, I can help you prep the car, but I won't spray BC/CC without fresh air supply, I don't have the equipment. BC/CC you can start color sanding the next day. Color sanding, buffing, waxing will take a weekend.
Mine was Maako, $1500 (do they have those out there?). It isn't perfect, but it isn't bad either. There is one light spot, and two places with a little trash in the paint - almost impossible to see, especially the light spot (it was several months before I noticed it). They even fixed the "bumped" nose and it looks perfect. Look at my pictures at http://photos.yahoo.com/leeloo67 (in the Corvette album) - just added some "before" pictures at the bottom (yes, it was faded through to the primer). Which looks better - the faded junk or the $1500 job?
good God man!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MAAAAAAAAAAKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Please!
Not on a vette!!!

Why not? My neighboor prepped his 62 Pontiac Grand Prix, took it to Maaco, paid 800 for the single stage Urethane Red, perfect job, looks like a factory lacquer.
at macco they dont even prep the car just blow off the dust off teh car down here dont even wash it down or use tac rags 2 get dust off of it so in like a year your paint will be flying off i like painting cars myself i took auto body and mechaincs in high school and i did have a scolarship for a auto body school

That's why you do the prepping yourself, the masking, the cleaning the final once over with the tack rag.....just make arrangements with the shop Mgr. I'm going to have Maaco shoot BC/CC on my 82 Regal Turbo Coupe, I'm doing all the prep work, including masking, cleaning, washing, etc....
Maako even put new pinstripes on the car between tones! By the way, my Dad and my cousin, about 15 years ago, invented a dust repellant (Pre-Tack Dust Release) specificly for painting Corvettes and other non-metal cars (but could be used on metal also - we painted all our cars, in a homemade paintbooth made of plastic, home air filters, and K-mart box fans). Not a single Covette painter (or anyone) within 1,000 miles had any interest in this invention! We even gave some of it away (the first one is always free), and they all said it worked great, but still had no interest in buying! The moral is: if you are looking for quality beyond compare - do it yourself.
I am also in the Akron area and have researched the local shops. prices range from $5K to 10K depending on the quality desired. I will be sending my '69 out this weekend for PPG BC/CC to a local shop. The owner only does one car at a time therefore he is not spreading himself too thin. He also does quite a few Corvettes, which I feel is very important. I am looking for a show quality finish including door jambs, wheel wells, underhood etc. and will be set back approx. $9k. You get what you pay for. If you are interested in the contact let me know.
I got my 72 stripped to the glass...sanded flat...minor glass repair...sealer primed...two stage Millie Miglia...uderside of hood, wiper valley, inside of doors, and door jambs... and the whole thing buffed out for 6K. But I took it apart before and assembled after. Check around, pricing seems to be consistant in various parts of the country.
