Today, I pulled the timing chain cover, oil pan and cam. The cam lobe was wiped badly. The oil pan had chunks of metal in it and the whole bottom was covered in that wonderful black metal sludge. I also pulled the #3 main cap. Obvious wear plus one big scratch right in the middle down to the copper layer.
Vice rebuilding this one and doing the retrofit hyd roller cam route, I am seroiusly staring to think ZZ4 short block. A 383 would be nice but I am not sure that my Edelbrock RPM heads could properly feed one. I am also looking at the Crane HR276 cam. Power range is 2000-5500 and I am cruising at 2000 at 70mph in overdrive. No more Comp Cams for this boy.
BTW: I have a broken off timing chain cover bolt in the original block. Every time I try to drill it for the Easy-out, it goes in deeper. :mad
Oh well, at least the Fat Tire still tastes good.

Re: Updated report on the AFU engine. (SteveG75)
:hat Okay steve, what is a AFU engine? Auto Failure Unit? Air/Fuel Unity? Air Flow User? Auto Flunky University? Any Fools Underhood Engine?
So I read your old post to try and clear things up and now I'm asking why you want to drink for a "flat tire" and still don't know where the AFU came from.
If your' having block problems Steve the small block chevy has a bunch of great options right from the Chevy dealer. Yes maybe a ZZ4 short block for about $2000 will help you make closer to 400 ponies. With those Edelbrock heads (and a new hyd cam) you can turn a $1300 LM1 into a 350 hp street mill. Now the General has 383" stroker short blocks availible for about $3000. This is warrenty equipment that the dealer will even install for you.
The prices on new blocks look so good these days it's hard to justify all the machine work cast required on used blocks. Unless you have some specialty applications/requirements. :chevy
A stroker kit is under a grand, and if you run a mild cam the RPM heads would be fantastc on a 383.Most likely pull 425hp/500lbs with a fairly smooth idle.
Just my .02 :yesnod:
A 383 would be nice. One concern I do have is that with my Tremec first (3.27) and 3.36 rear, I have no traction in first as it is. One reason I went with the larger cam is to kill some low end torque. I don't mind a bit of an idle and I like the 350's ability to rev. I have to do some thinking on this.
Sorry about the acronyms. AFU= All F**ked Up. Or it could be a PoS (Piece of S**t).
Fat Tire = excellent beer from New Belgium Brewery, For Collins, CO. Yum.
