I have been trying to get more power out of my car without going overboard or getting myself in deeper than my ability would allow. This means I have nixed the heads (too expensive) and cam (this is probably beyond my ability). I divided my upgrades into three categories; intake, exhaust and ignition. I have pretty much finished the exhaust (headers and true duals with Flowmasters) and intake (new Q'jet, Performer manifold and K&N air cleaner). This has given me a nice little boost in overall power for not a whole bunch of money and are parts that can probably be transferred over to a crate engine some time in the future.
I now want to concentrate on the ignition but to be honest I don't know anything about it. I have HEI, good wires and have recurved the advance. From reading the information, I see that there are new ignition circuits, distributors and coils. There may be other items but I haven't figured this out yet. Can someone the advantages of the various components, how they work together, power improvement, etc., and if I have overlooked something.
Go with a MSD pro billet dist (easy to adjust the curve)
MSD 6AL box (capacitive discharge, multiple sparks per cyl revolution)
MSD SS coil (smaller and eaiser to fit on firewall, same fire as blaster)
I know some of the people on here will say that a HEI is just as good and maybe it is, but when I changed to this system I could feel it in the stomp the pedal test. Not much more power but enough to feel and everthing feels smoother now. Oh and by the way, my HEI that I took out had a MSD coil, new module, recurve kit, and a hp cap on it, so I am comparing apples to apples
