Default Painting Rocker Panels

I have an 80' and my rocker mouldings are getting kinda ugly. Should I just repaint them, and which kind of paint should I use, or should I just go out and buy new ones? Does any one know of a paint that looks like chrome, as for some reason, the brown and gold-platinum paint likes chrome. Thanks!!

The aluminum panels under the doors. They are black on the 1980.

I painted mine with gloss black Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy spray paint from the Home Depot. Stronger than enamel and slightly more glossy than OEM flat/satin rocker paint. No primer neccesary, just sand, clean with brake cleaner and shoot.

Smells real funky so keep area well ventilated and it takes 24 hours to dry properly. Looks beautiful and so far no chips at all. I highly recommend it.

I would get 2 since they are only $5-$6 each. I think I did 2 coats on each front and 1 coat on the back side (which was done first).

If I remember I had to go to a few stores since Black was a hard color to find. Green and White were the most common. You might have to try a local/regional hardware store too if the Home Depot isnt carrying that color.

If you want it to be really trick, and really easy to maintain, take it to a metal processor and have them remove all the sulfur anodizing, then have it re-anodized black. Remember, correct black panels have a polished aluminum strip above the screw rail.

I took a pair of 79 panels and had them stripped when I wrecked one of my 78 pace car panels. Turned out great.

However, don't go with repops. They just don't fit.

:iagree: I got mine black anodized & they look great. But you MUST make sure that all the original anodizing is removed, otherwise the black won't cover those parts (all anodizing does is to basically put a layer of oxidized aluminium on the surface & this layer is colored with a dye. If there a layer of existing oxidization present then you can't cover it with another). One big bonus with the anodized surface is that it doesn't chip as easily as paint. Here's a pic of mine, but it doesn't really show how nice they look.

Has anyone done them in a charcoal color or the gray like a TT II wheel center? I was thinking of trying that color when I get my new wheels.

Yikes man, abreviating things and talking in one continuous sentance makes that a little unreadable!

How permanent is an anodized finish?

Get paint stripper and remove the ugly black finish, there's nice shiny aluminium under there that will really shine with a bit of polishing

These were black too

Translation for those that need it:

Here is what I did:

First, I purchased the glossy rust aluminum stuff. There is another name for it, but I am not sure of the name. You can purchase it at Ace hardware. It can be purchased either by the pint or gallon.

I started to use it on my frame. What I did is sand / grind down the frame to get the surface rust off. Then, I used a meter cleaner (same stuff you use to wipe an object down with before you paint it). I took a brush and applied the meter cleaner. It is difficult to do unless you have the car jacked up in the air.

I am hoping to finish mine in the garage after I purchase my new home. I find it terribly difficult to jack the car up in sand.

(and yes, I am being a :jester :conehead :hat )
