I posted 2 weeks ago about being reported to the EPA for being too loud and having to have the Vette tested for noise level. Well I have passed the test now. The test consists of a meter placed .5 meter from the exhaust outlet at a 45 degree angle and the legal level for my Vette is 96dB. The test is done at 80% of redline but my tester used 3300 as his marker.
It was suggested that I put steel wool up the pipe and I tried that. The only place to put the wool was in the collector and I had a plate to hold it in. It wouldn't have lasted the trip to the testing station. On a trip round the block it was back to the "pre wool" level by the time I got home.
I ended up building some baffles to slip into the collectors and then stuffing some chicken wire into the baffles as well. This worked well enough to achieve the 96 dB reading but is choking the exhaust. I think they will fall out very shortly! :D
Oh, and I have finally worked out how to use the free 10meg of space that my ISP provides so I can now post pics! :hurray:
Here is one of the baffles I made.

Re: How I got through the Noise Testing..... (RHD '68 L89)
James, it is a great pic, right-hand drive 'vettes are sort of rare around here. :D Very interesting to see one, I'd like to see your other conversion details, steering, etc.

:D
Having driven both a LHD and RHD in Ireland, I have to say if I owned a Vette in a country that drives on the other side of the road, I would definitely convert to RHD, mainly for safety reasons.
Do you have any closeups of your RHD conversion? It looks very clean. I'm curious what had to be custom fabricated and how you did it.
Now that I have the ability to post Pics I am going to start posting the Rack conversion, the dash and other bits as they are requested.
I am sure Norval and TT would be interested :D
We are now allowed to have LHD on vehicles over 25 years(with restrictions) and 30 years( full registration).
The guys who are into the NCRS thing are very happy cos they don't have to muck up a perfectly good car to drive it.
Both my vehicles are RHD because they had to be when I got them.
I am not sure what I would do if I got another LHD car to play with.
Pictures of Racks!

James, just how did you get your tester to believe that an L89 redline was 4125rpm or did he just feel sorry for you.......it is a rediculuous test regime IMHO.......john :chevy

Yeah, it is rediculous. I told the tester that the motor had been built for 5500 redline and he had a listen and chose 3300. He was also a bit of a motor head cos he said if it was any quieter it wouldn't sound right!
