Default Rookie Engine Rebuild

Im about to have my original engine rebuilt, as she has over 100K and I would like a little more performance. Im thinking 300hp - From what I understand I can get that from a mild cam upgrade - My question is what is a mild cam? Type / Specs
I want drivability, as in everyday driver in the summer. Already have Dual Exhaust w/ Flowmasters, and will install Ceramic Headers with the refreshed engine.
What else should I have done to the engine besides a cam?
What things should I look out for?
Thank you,

300 hp is easy. a cam in the 226@.050 range should get you there with 9.0:1 comp and a set of good heads. intake is optional, your stock will work to 350hp. adding compression and flow from better heads/cam combo will really help you out. stay under 9.5:1 with iron heads and 10.5:1 with aluminum heads. headers and your duals, things are all smiles. AKRAY4PLAY are saying that with my stock heads and intake along with the cam you mentioned, I should be able to hit 300 - or do I have to change the heads along with the cam?
Sorry for the addtional question, but I dont want to screw this up.

Thanks

i would get heads and a cam. a cam will help out, but headers and heads really make your engine flow. if you want to rev your motor more than what you have now, change the cam. 300hp is relatively mild, headers and dual exhaust gets you 30-35hp alone. putting a good set of heads will get you anther 40-45hp. the cam can get another 30 hp. your car should have 76cc chamber "smogger" heads, they suck for performance. you can get a set of Dart, AFR, Trickflow, Brodix, Edlebrock, etc. aftermarket heads, or GM performance heads. GM makes several heads that will work for your needs. the big thing with newer heads is the smaller chamber, gives you a better compression ratio, and the intake/exhaust runners are much more effecient.

bottom line, your lower end will really like the new heads if it is in good condition. the motor will love headers. your rpm band will dictate your cam. your intake won't care until your going over 350 hp. your stock cam with stock intake should give nice bottom end torque and throttle responce, both things are needed for street driving fun. Comp cams 12-238-2 is a great street cam.. Plenty of vacumm and a rock steady idle that can't be told from stock. A good valve job, a edelbrock performer intake, and a 600 cfm carb and headers will easily give you what you are looking for. Tom
