I think the new TTO's are built on the line of the old Appliance Wheel. If you look at the pics above, the new TTO has a recessed lug nut like the Appliance wheel did.
What Appliance did was make the backing plate 1/2 inch thicker (so no spacers) and bevel it to clear the calipers. Both wheels use the same lug nut and so the Appliance and TTO wheels need the recessed lug nuts.
Below is a pic of both the Appliance Wheel (left) and TTD Wheel (right), you can see the differences.
