Pep Poys sales personnel claim that their house brand tires are made by Cooper.
Assuming they are not lying to me... on many occasions...
I have the Pep Boys Z-Rated Futura's on my Mustangs (rated 140mph) and their Sport tires on my Silverado.
The truck tires blow out if you run over a toad turd.
I've had at least 3 blow-outs from hitting minor road debris.
Sidewalls are extremely spongy as posted above.
Coopers came with my 79 when I purchased it a year ago and seem to be doing great! I have had good luck with coopers on a Ford F250 Superduty too. :yesnod:
I have Kumho Ecsta STX 275 60R15s on the rear. I am utterly in love with these tires, they are fat (wide), huge (fill the wheel opening), and get tons of compliments too. The also seem to have pretty good traction, Kumhos are really coming up in racing. And as someone once said, you get to say Kumho in polite conversation
Yokohamas are pretty decent too. And ultra cheap, cheapest tire of all from Tirerack.com My rear tires would still be going strong if I hadn't killed them with a spring-bolt. And the front would be good, if my alignment hadn't been off for a 2-day crosscountry drive!
I'm assuming cost is the primary reason for considering the Coopers. That said, while I believe they are decent tires, check out the Goodyear dealer. The Goodyear dealers have a lot of room to negotiate, and may actually sell you some Goodyears for Cooper prices. But you have to dicker with them, and always threaten to walk out. Or actually walk out.
I nearly bought some Coopers from a local shop. But went and checked out the Goodyear store. What started out as a $540 set of tires, installed, ended up costing me $350, installed. But as stated, I had to play the game, roll my eyes, make faces, walk out. Then, I ended up with a great price for my tires.
I had Cooper Cobras on my modified 66 Olds Cutlass, and they handled great. I put some equally priced cheap tires on it just before I sold it (in 1997) and was amazed how bad the new tires were compared to the worn out Coopers. The are a good cheap tire. Joe
I'm really surprised this thread has carried on like it has. When it finally came down to purchase time I was able to get Dunlops cheaper than the Coopers. As I mentioned above, in the past the Dunlops have served me well so I went ahead and got a set of them. Sure was a different ride home.
