My 76 l48 has a crappy Qjet on it right now and its shot it just dumps fuel into the engine. My engine has been pulled before and I think its pretty much stock. Well I am building a 383 Stroker for a couple of years down the road but for now I am needing a new carb. so I thought I would buy some parts I need right now.Tell me If you guys think this is a good idea.
Edelbrock 1406 600cfm carb.
edelbrock 2701 eps intake
Edelbrock 1721 Fuel pump
Edelbrock 2102 Cam and Lifter kit. or the Crane 100132
will the cam work in the 383 or will I need more lift.
Anyone had A problem with a Qjet dump fuel into the engine?
Oh yes, troubles with Q-Jets dumping. If the fuel pressure is too high (I have found you need to limit it to 5.5-6 lbs) you blow past the needle and seat. If the float level is too high, it can dump. If the primary throttle plates are open too wide, you dump. Generally this is caused by too high an idle speed to compensate for something else screwed up or out of adjustment, like timing retarded etc. If the secondary throttle plates are open even a little at idle, you will dump. This is caused by mechanical bind.
I think the Edelbrock carb and manifold are a good choice. The fuel pump will work great, but consider a fuel pressure regulator for it. Edelbrock makes a fuel kit with the plate, regulator, and lines. Look at their site http://www.edelbrock.com for ideas under the fuel and filter section. Good luck and take time to do it right the first time.
