I was thinking about buying a GM HEI distributor P/N 10456413, like the ones that crate engines come with. However, I know that they come with a melonized gear for roller cams. Can this be used on non-roller cams (pre 86-87)?
Why am I wanting to buy a new distributor? If I am going to the expense of buying a Demon carburetor, on top of the other thousands I've spent on the engine, what's a couple hundred bucks more for peace of mind?
If you were buying either a new GM distributor, or the MSD billet HEI, which would you go with?
After going through a couple of bronze gears on my Comp cam I called them and asked what gear I should be running and they told me the standard steel GM gear would be fine. I bought one from the dealer and have had trouble free running for years.
If you wonder about what gear to run check with the cam grinder or in this case whatever the dealer lists for that year.
