keep in mind only 2 of the five bolts are exposed by removing the interior trim so how the hell do you get to the other bolts (SEE PICS OF NEW TRIM ABOVE) and more importantly how do you pull up those thin polished trim strips that are cemented in after 36 years without bending them to unrepairable condition??
Re: Help installing new chrome windshield trim (Cali,68,L-79)
I hate to tell you but the screws that hold the end pieces are behind the inner window trim, the a pillar weateherstrip (you can see the screw in the one pic behind the rubber goo) and THE WINDSHIELD :(
The SS trim just has screws behind the upper windshield interior moulding and it clips into metal clips that are screwed to the upper windshield frame bar (also behind windshield)
Re: Help installing new chrome windshield trim (Cali,68,L-79)
Please tell me can I install by cutting the old one out with a dremel and reinstall the new one without any front bolts holding it so the windshield does not have to come out or am I risking catostrophic failure if the tops up at highway speed.
I guess I'm screwed and have to return the product, windshield is great shape and no way am I removing it. :nono: :nono: :nono:
I guess i'm stuck with crappy looking windshield trim.
Re: Help installing new chrome windshield trim (Cali,68,L-79)
The end pieces look like 69, not 68, and to remove them, the windshield trim has to be removed, a phillips head bend 90 degrees may get at the front screws, but you risk chipping the windshield....so, the windshield has to be removed if you don't want to Bubbatize the glass.
Re: Help installing new chrome windshield trim (GDaina)
I just did this a little while back on my 69 because I had a new wind shield installed. This is my opnion or what I would do but this is just me:
For sure the windshield needs to come out for it to be done with any ez and without risking damaging the glass.
Have a pro remove the windshield if you do not feel comfortable with it. Also see if he can then come back once you are ready for it to go back in.
While it is out I would check the frame for signs of rust and also remove the stainless piece that goes across the top of the wind shield frame and polish it out so it nice a pretty too. reinstall it and your new pieces and then have the windshield guy come put it back in. Its done correctly and you also have something that looks nice and does not bother you everytime you look at it.
Just me though. Good luck.
Re: Help installing new chrome windshield trim (James)
There is a way ...
With the stainless trim removed from the top of the windshield, you can take
a dremel tool with a fine stone and grind slight recesses in the edge of the
windshield. Take just enough away to get a screwdriver into the screw.
Of course, this does "Bubba-ize" you windshield, but it is all covered up
when the trim is put back into place.
Those parts should have a warning next to the picture in the catalogs.
The trim is stuck there by the butyl rubber windshield sealer (assuming original).
Heat (blowdryer) will soften this stuff up, and there are tools to help get the trim out of the
clips that are screwed to the W/S frame (top). Gotta go slow and be careful.
Re: Help installing new chrome windshield trim (NHvette)
I just took the middle piece, upper interior pieces off and looked down. There is no way I can dremel that amount of glass without risking chipping or cracking the glass. unfortunetly it looks to be a wash. :nonod: I guess I'll return the parts until I crack the winshield or its time to repaint the car.
