It really doesn't look that worn, but I think it falls in the category of "while you're there".
You don't need a whiz bang high $$ chain set. You can use a good quality basic Cloyes double roller and do fine. I'm talking about the basic $30 set with three way adjustable sprocket.
No need to buy the $75-$100+ sets. I use a basic one with my 825HP 540 with a .731 lift roller and killer springs turning 7500 rpm with no issue. The same one has been in there for 3-4 years and still is very tight.
Lot of "designer" stuff out there these days. Spend $$ where it's needed. More $$ doesn't guarantee better performance.
A true double roller set up such as Cloyes will help considerably. The average age of the stock set up is about the milage you have indicated. They do wear out. :thumbs:

The problem is that Chevrolet used nylon coated teeth on the gears starting sometime in the early '70s. I wish I had pictures of the catastrophic failure that occured on my 454, half of the teeth sheared off suddenly while I was driving. The engine had about 100K miles on it. I used the opportunity to put a better cam in, but I just had the heads off about 10K miles earlier and it would have been only another hour or two to have replaced the timing setup then. I just didn't realize it was nylon and prone to fail.
Change it, and use a high quality setup from Cloyes, the $30ish one is OK as long is its a good brand, I think that's the one I used, I know it was less than $50.

A better way to check wear is to grab the chain at 12 oclock on the cam gear and pull up to see if the chain still fits snuggly over the cam gear or not. Play is one thing but also the chain should fit snuggly around the gear.
I would definitely replace it while I had the cover off. It is good insurance.
