I'm switching to an electric fan and would like to know if a single 16" hi-flow (2800 ~ 3300 cfm) fan is adequate. Car is stock 350, auto, AC (which never gets used) with new (original) radiator.
Danny: I like your style ;)
What diameter is the original? Florida gets pretty hot and you don't want to undercool it. With fan, shroud, and thermostat switch, I'd think it would be allright. Still wouldn't want to get stuck in traffic on a hot day. Especially without AC!!!!
The stock fan is less than 16", but I think it pulls more air than an electric. I've seen some set-ups here with a single electric fan, but I haven't been able to find those threads with "search".
Yep...it seems everyone with an insane engine is running dual Spals or Flex-a-Lites. However, I'm wondering if my ground-thumping, window rattling 195 BHP SB also needs duals. There's a big difference in price between a nice hi-flow 16" and duals.
And furthermore...there is NO FREAKIN' WAY I'm going to wrestle that stock fan shroud back in position. I'll convert the entire engine to electric before I attempt that again.
Personally, I will be running a factory fan/clutch on my big block. And the shroud may be a pain in the butt, but it DOES work good. Remember, even the L-88 used a standard fan/clutch and it was pretty wild.
I have an '87 vette main fan in the basic puller position mounted in the stock stroud, BUT, and here is the cool part....I split the shroud into a top and bottom halfs, that makes it way much easier to get in and out....I also moved the fan far forward in the install as possible and keep the shroud functional....and also cut the depth of the shroud down much as possibel...getting rid of that 18 inch diameter 'wind tunnel' the original fan was in....this makes the entire engine much easier to work with/on....
any sort of temp switch can work for activating the stock GM fan relay....
it's basically a bolt in swap with a bit of creativity...I am getting ready to mod that entire setup once again in my car though, as I have a spreader bar, and want to install that, need clearance on the fan....
I run duel Be Cool fans in my 67 Nova (steel head 600 hp 462) They work great they should turn your motor into a ice cube  . My experience is one clutch fan is usually better than 1 electric fan but 2 electric fans are way better then 1 clutch fan. I run a 7 blade with a 70 454 clutch and a be cool rad with a 180 therm in my Vette.
