I have a t56 6 speed from keislers and I would like to talk about rear gears. I have a 2.66 first and .8 5th and .62 6th. I feel stupid because I thought I had a 3.73 because the car launched so well but I only have a 3.08.
At the present time I am strongly leaning toward a 3.73, because I was told the 4.10 have an intolerable gear whine. I have a 350 which makes almost no torque below 2500 rpm and obviously this is for my 74.
The 4.10 should not have any more whine than a 3.70. With the 4.10 you will need to have a different carrier or find a thick ring gear for a 3 series carrier. I think the 3.70 gears would be great. I have 3.70 with a Tremec 5 speed. A .68 overdrive gives me a final of 2.51. Any lower than this and and I would be bogging on the highway. My 350 does not make much power below 2500 either. The 3.70 with a 2.66 first gives you a 9.8 first gear. $.10 would be a little better but the 3.70 would work fine.

Would apreciate your thoughts.
Based on this, I'd think you should 1st concentrate on the ratios IN the transmission, to make-sure the RPMs stay above 2500 on the shift/drop.
Then, base your ring & pinion ratio on your needs;
if you're just a 'cruiser', or competing in the 'Stop-Light Nationals', throw as much gear as you can at it,
but if high-speed effeciency is your goal, stick with low-numerical gearing.
Just my $.02 worth...
