Default How do I use this tach meter?

Just bought a used tach/dwell meter off of ebay. I'm used to my uncle's which has an inductive pickup. This just has two alligator clips: one black, one red. Where do these go?

 I don't know how that meter hooks up but the little combo engine analyser I use connects the red positve lead to the positive of the coil. and the black wire just goes to ground. You may be able to use the model number on the manufacturs website and download an instruction manual.

If I remember right, the coil for '75 HEI is integrated into the dist cap. I don't know how to get to it without exposing it, and that sounds dangerous to me. Any other options? Or do I just have to find an inductive pickup?

Okay BD, I used an HEI on my Pontiac and was able to clip onto the little metal connector tang just sticking out under the cap top. I think there are two tangs there and may have look up which is for tach - or find a shop manual (library?), or on the web. Or maybe I fabbed a wire to temp install between coil wire and coil connector. I think I remember just crimping a fairly short wire to a female connector to fit over that tang and clipped meter lead onto the exposed end. :yesnod:

mine worked the same way..on the drivers side of your tach there are two wires, maybe three..look in your chiltons or haynes..one is ignition and the other is something.

I would like to know how to connect the tach to my 1980 - I saw one at the parts store and it had only two wires, one black the other red - I am still a little unclear how to hook up this tach meter to my 1980 HEI when doing a tune up - any thoughts would be helpful - Thanks :)

On the side of my 80's dist cap there is a relay with 4 wires coming out the bottom . They are marked as to their purpose. Since my car isn't going anywhere anytime soon, I rigged a little wire off the tach wire. Mine is about an inch long and has an exposed end to hook the dwell/tach meter to. It is short enough that I don't have to worry about it touching anything but long enough to connect to easily.
