I would go for about 20 degrees and lock the total to 38 or so all in my 3000. This is from a chevy high performance manual.
I have my bigblock limited to 43 degrees at 3000 and it seems to like this much advance. I do have a retard computer that takes timing away as the boost builds since I am blown.

Initial is set at 12 and I have 36 total by 3000 rpm. An additional 10 degrees of vacuum when cruising. I tried more advance and it slowed the car down.

Mine is pretty much 79 stock. I've set at 12 in idle, full 36 at 2,500 plus another 10 vacuum.

Mine's set at 20 inital, 36 total w/o vac. Some of you guys with 12 initial, why do I not have as much travel in my mechanical advance?? It was been rebuilt and moves freely, and resprung with soft springs to reach max advance earlier.

Stock HEI has 15 deg advance built in so to get 36 deg total you set it to 21 deg initial( this is without vacuum advance connected )

My MSD Pro Billet is adjustable I forget what the range is but it allows you to keep whatever you like for intial timing and lets you advance the total timing up or donw if you want. :D

Ah, that's cool. Well as long as I'm not pinging (one good thing about low compression!) and no heat trouble that somebody else mentioned, is there any reason not to run so advanced? Could I machine out the slot to get more travel or is that going to cause other complications?
