Default What carb for my engine?

Greetings all, I'm new to the website. I know this has been ask a lot but I could use some help. I've been trying to do the research on the internet but I'm still not sure what to pick up for my '81. I'm still pretty new to building engines.

Here is the engine info:

Block: 355 4-bolt with flat top pistons, 9.5:1 compression ( I think )
Cam: tfs-k31401001, 228/234 duration, 480/494 lift
Heads: tfs-30400002 23 degree heads / 1.47in springs, 1.5 roller rockers
Intake: I'm looking to pick up a performer rpm air-gap, not worring about hood clearance at this point.
Gears: I plan on putting in 3.55

If you could also recommend a torque convertor I would appreicate. For right now, I still plan on using the old 350c trans. I figure as long as I don't abuse it, it should be ok. Although I'm not really sure how much horsepower/torque the motor will be putting out. I'm a little worried that the trans won't last long. I'm mainly building it for the street but I'd like to run it at the track just to see what the times would be like.

thanks

I've heard nothing but good things about the Speed Demon carburetors. When they are tuned right they really run. For the price it's probably your best bet. I want to get one for my 81

As far as torque convertors go, that all depends on how you drive it. With the 3:55 gears you plan on using I wouldn't get too crazy with a high stall converter if you want the car to be streetable.

I run a similar setup with a bit more compression (10:1) and the stck 350 bore. I have a Demon 650 with Vac. secondaries and am very happy with it. Great performance out of the box. However, many folks on here would say that you can run a 750 with on problems on a 350 and even more would say that mech. secondaries are the way to go even if you are running an auto.

Hmmm.....the Road Demon is a pretty good street carb.

But since you're running a small block I'd stick to 650cfm MAX. :yesnod:

Your setup sounds pretty close to what I'm running (maybe) see my sig. Anyway, I'm running a 670cfm Holley and love it. BTW, my original QJet is rated at 750cfm. Most folk will agree that a carb in the 650-750 range should be fine. Maybe the lower end of the cfm range is better for more torque and vacuum.

You need a 750 mechanical secondary...either Barry Grant or Holley. For TC, try a 2000-2500...but whatever stall you get, you'll prolly want more eventually.

I don't know how you plan on driving your car, but I'd say you're good with a 750 Holley DP. I fugure you could look for a torque converter with an "advertised" stall speed in the 2,400 RPM range.

Thanks for the info and thank you sling blade for the link. It sounds like I can run a 750 without any problems.

Yeah, why not? Most of the QuadraJets that GM was sticking on top of just about everything back in the day were available in two flavors, I believe--780 and 800 CFM.

i run a speed demon 650 on my 10.5:1 comp 383... it does awesome.

the people that helped me pick my carb were the engine crew on the boat team I was with. they had a 976 hp 427ci boat that won many many races. I trusted them and am very happy...hopefully i can afford to send to lars soon.

whats wrong with a Q-jet? they last forever,easy to find,cheap,good for street driving,better on gas then a holley,and best of all it looks real cool on a fast car! i went 10.49 @ 126.50 in a 3200# camaro with 10.5 to 1 comp. and 1.94 valves with a 650 cfm Q-jet. (SS/HA)

You might want to double check your rear end gear ratio. I've got an '80 model and am going with the 3.54 Dana 44. I don't think that 80 - 82 had the 3.55 option. That was for '79 and below.

Enjoy your Vette!
