Best Starter
Last summer when I got my Corvette it had the problem that it would start fine when cold but whenever I would turn it off after a ten minute drive or more it would not start up for 2 to 3 hours. At first I wondered if perhaps something was draining the battery so I got a battery cutoff and everytime I park it I cutt off the juice. But it still wouldn't work. I now think that the starter is going bad and that I need a new one. I would like to get one that would have good performance and would not get too hot to start. Does anyone have an opinion on which to choose. I have a 79 vette with a L82 engine. Thanks for your suggestions.

I had your problem. You're suffering from starter heat soak. Here's the fix (cheap): keep the starter, but get a new AC Delco solenoid and an AC Delco 1958679 solenoid spring (it's shorter than stock). It worked for me! :yesnod:

I had a heat soak problem years ago. I fixed it very cheaply. At the time, JC Whitney sold shields for GM starters which protected the solenoid and main body of the starter from heat soak. The shields were allegedly made from material used on the space shuttle (I never placed much weight on that) but I have never had a heat soak problem in over 15 years and this includes hot Atlanta summers of 95+ degrees. You may want to look at a JC Whitney catalog to see if they still sell them. They worked great for me.

I have the same problem, my 1980 starts fine cold, but when hot (running for a hour) I'll have to wait until it cools down for it to start. So what you are saying is my starter is probably fine I just need a new solenoid. Sounds like that should be pretty easy to install, did you do it yourself? Why do I need a new AC Delco 1958679 solenoid spring? It looks like the solenoid is all one unit. Did you install a heat shield?

I've had heat soak ever since installing headers on the 77. Put a heat blanket on the starter right after header install...didn't work. Then the starter went bad...replaced the starter and installed heat blanket AND heat shield....didn't work either!!!! So I'm watching this thread too... :mad

I tend to overkill and went with a Moroso heat shield as well. I became sick and tired of that 30-45 minute wait for a stock starter to spin after a nice Sunday afternoon stop for a milkshake or ice cream cone.

I had the same problem, l tried a starter shield, it did nothing, when l then installed the GM mini starter that Paul67 show's in the picture above, not a problem since.

When with a summit Pro Torq starter, similar to the GM one but $147, been working great for 4 years after going through 3 regualr starters in three years.
