Been prepping my '79 for a body off resto the past few weeks. It heads to the shop this weekend to get the body pulled and have the frame cleaned up and powdercoated. My question to you is, what's an average price to pay for having the frame powdercoated? Any rough ideas out there? I've got a place lined up and I want to make sure the deal I'm getting is a good one.
In Houston, to powdercoat the frame cost $350.00. The price reflected the powdercoating co. picking up the frame and delivering it when done. They would knock $50 off if I had brought it to them. It also included dipping the frame in some type of acid to totally clean everything on it.
I have decided not to powdercoat my frame, because if there needs to be any work done, such as crossmembers, or any frame repair, you have to chip the powdercoat off in the area to work, then paint that area when done. Just my opinion.
I don't know the cost but what about having the frame cleaned then do modifications to the frame like gusseting the lower A arm mounting points then return for painting? http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=722538
$350 sounds more like what I'm getting it done for.... I've been quoted (unofficially) $250 for sandblasting and powdercoating... sounded like a pretty darn good deal to me. I'm doing all the prep work and having a friend drop the frame off for a few bucks.
Norval makes a good point, once coated you can't work on it anymore or you will have to destroy the ncie finish and you can not touch it up with powdercoating again.
I started on my frame this week, I gusseted the a arm mounts, plated over the access hole for the steering box, boxed up the frame horns and am gonna reinforce the front crossmember as wel as do some other stuff to it before I have it dipped, zinc phosphate washed and powdercoated. I can probably have the thing coated for less than 50$ since I bring my own special powder (mercedes specially formulated sivergray undercarriage powder).
I've powdercoated many items on a car and have mixed feelings.
Matchframe makes a great point, when you have do a repair, you ruin the finish. Very few folks are going to pull a car down to the frame to recreate the powder finish.
I'm pulling my 75 Stingray down to the frame for a ground up rework and have decided to use the brute force method. Rent a steam cleaner for a weekend followed by many sessions of Simple Green and the pressure washer....and the good old wire brush grinder. Let the beast set for a week to dry out hand sand and prime with metal etch primer and shoot the chassis black to it. The Dupont metal prep is awesome when used on freshly sanded metal. Wash it down following usage and blow dry it and prime it. The metal is absolutely ready for primer and paint. I have never had any rust following its use.
I just read the corvette restorers manual and was intrigued by the treatment they gave the inner frame channels. It was some sort of sealer coating pumped into the rails. Has any of you guys heard of it?
Powder is pretty....but I really hate farming out my love labor. I don't get in a hurry and like the tedious stuff (providing I have it in my garage and don't have to drive it daily).
Sounds like you are getting a very good price.I paid about 500 for powder coating (including all major frame components) and another 300 for sandblasting. I don't think you can beat the durability of the powder coating, but if you are trying to build a NCRS correct car it won't fly.
