I am replacing the plastic speedometer gear in the in the 4 speed transmission on my 68. The old gear cam out easily, the new gear will hardly fit through the hole in the transmission. I have to wiggle it back and forth while pushing on it to get it into the hole.
You're not getting a response so I will give this a try. There is a break point between 22 and 24 teeth where the drive gear as well as the driven gear has to be changed. Most cars I have seen use the 20 or 22 tooth driven gears. The orange gear has 25 teeth. So if you removed a 20 or 22 tooth gear you will have to replace the drive gear as well. Please see attached. http://members.core.com/~faldrich/speedo.htm
How did it feel once installed? How many teeth different is your new gear? Did you also replace the O-ring on your gear housing? I have a collection of speedo gears that I used to correct my car's speedo. I am happy with it now.
I guess maybe I mis-spoke. Instead of saying the gear barely fits I should have said I have to force the gear through the hole in the transmission case.
I haven't actually pushed it in all the way. I have been waiting to hear from others that have change the gear to see if this was normal.
The old gear was also an orange one, and the previous owner told me that is what I need. He also said he thought he had wiped out the gear shortly after installing it.
djcwardog, did you experience a tight fit with any in your collection?
