Just found out that I need new suspension components. Pretty much ALL suspension components. Front and rear. Sitting in a barn for 7 years does have it's disadvantages.
I don't want to go back with OE components, but want to upgrade to a performance type, since I "may" run some autocrosses in the future. But for the most part it will be my daily driver. Looking for a "happy medium". I have heard that the Urethane bushings squeek after some road time?
So does anybody have any recommendations ?
Also, I need one inner tie rod end replaced. I have done this on a Mustang II front end (in my street rod) and it wasn't fun. Has anybody replaced these in their Vette and how difficult is it?
Give Dan Van Steel a call , he has areal good sale going on. He can answer any questions you have . Just tell him your intended use for the car. I was conserned about urethane bushings on mine. He told me they have a newer type bushing out that work great. I trusted him and he was right , no problems with squeaking. Dan is very freindly and will try to work with you any way he can. Several forum members can back me up on this , He is number one in my book with any suspension problem you have or question. Hope this helps you out.
I recommend poly urethane bushings. I have them on all my cars. As for the tie rod, that should be quite easy to replace. Just break it loose with a pickle fork and thread it off.
I have the VBP Performance Plus and the offset rear trailing arms on my 69 -- and I absolutely love it. After I get my F1s mounted on my new TTIIs, I will be looking for a removable roll cage so I can take my car around Sear's Point a few times.
I also put in a new power steering box, but am still not happy with the center slop and might try one of the boxes that I saw some of the other forum members have installed if I cant adjust the slop out of mine.
Go with the urethane I have them on my car for a couple of years without any noise. The newer bushing have a lube in the urethane and as long as you use the lube that comes with the bushing you will be in good shape. I was very impressed with the tightness and handleing of the urethane, I have done both the front and back and what a difference in performance and ride.
I went with Vette Brakes for everything on my front end. I picked up their front end rebuild kit, complete with idler arm and rubber bushings. Because I do not plan on autocrossing, ever, I went with the rubber bushings. I was afraid the poly's would squeek, and I didn't desire a super stiff ride.
The job itself is pretty easy. Though the rear, when it comes to the control arms, can be a real pain.
Definitely go with poly, they will last forever and as far as I have noticed don't contribute to stiffness at all. The "graphite impregnated" poly bushings shouldn't squeak, and mine haven't yet. Stiffer springs and shocks are what would really make your car noticeably stiffer. I prefer a really firm ride so I'm not the one to ask about spring rates ;)
Thanks for the info everyone !!! I have seen the posts about Dan and I think I'll just give him a call. Since I am going to have the front and rear torn apart, I might as well replace everything at once. Coil springs, rear leaf, shocks etc.
I don't know enough about the rear suspension to even know what I need to replace!! But I have a manual (two, actually) and I can figure that much out.
VB Max Performance Suspension System. Dual Mount Rear Fiberglass Spring, Transverse Front Spring. Fully adjustable ride hieght and spring rate in all four corners.
