POWER STEERING REBUILD
I am preparing to rebuild the power steering system in my 71 tomorrow. I have the rebuild kits that Mid Amerca sells for the power ram and the control valve as well as a set of new hoses. Has anyone used these kits? Is this a job that should be fairly simple to do right the first time or is it too complicated for a novice? I know I need to get a tie rod tool to remove the ram. Are there other special tools that I will need?

Just did mine ('78) kit from ZIP. I did it on a lift. After doing it, I would NOT do it on my back. You need a pickle fork and tubing wrenches. Not hard but it's going to be tricky doing it on your back. Good Luck!

You should get a "small pitmanarm and tie rod end puller" and a you will also need a pulley puller (no joke!) for the pump if you are rebuilding that. The pitman arm puller works to seperate the ram, idler arm, tie rod ends, control valve parts. (I am not sure what you are doing.) Basically, all those parts that are the size of the tie rod ends. The pickle fork may ruin the boots or worse. You should be able to borrow or rent the pullers you need from an aut parts store.
