Id take it to a shop that does emissions, your not that far off,i think its 220 hc and 1.2 co if i remember right.A little work on the carb. adjustment should get it threw. Also fresh oil change and plugs help also. And changing the timing will change it too.But its best to take it to a shop that they can put on the machine and adjust it from there.

Why dont you consider getting a "Collector Car Inspection"????

From what I hear all you have to do is prove that the Speedo works at the
inspection station, and there is no more emission testing for your vehicle.
You can pick up an application from your local DMV office for like 25 bucks,
and you get exempted from emission testing. The only catch is mileage per
year. My Inspection is up in May, and I am going for it...

Delpa >> If you get down to Bricktown, call me at my shop (732)477-3480 & ask for Bill. It's a Goodyear store.

PB82CE >> DMV requires car to be 25 years old for collector tags. Also, you must pass a regular inspection at a state (not private) facility first. After you pass & get the collector sticker, then you can modify, (put the cats & emission pump in the garage) but still not "legally".

I'm waiting for Hagerty to get my collector insurance card to me & putting regular use tags on. Then putting the Stage II exhaust on.

BacaBill...your care does not have to be 25+yrs. old to get collector car inspection. You are thinking of the QQ plates. Collector car inpection is available for any car which is driven 2500? miles or less each year. The car must be basically stock and has to pass a safety inspection (no emission testing) and make sure that the odometer is functioning. All you have to do is go to the DMV office and pay the $25 and then bring the paperwork to the inspection station to get your sticker. The sticker is a big triagle as opposed to the normal square inspection sticker. My girlfriends father has a collector car inspection on an 87 wrangler.

Drive until you are down to 1/4 tank of gas. Buy three or four bottles of isopropal alcohol....yes that's right rubbing alcohol. And put in tank and go to a diferrent test station to test. It WILL pass.

This would be a crossfire, right? The high CO level shows it is not running closed loop. Even if the cat was dead the CO should be lower. My plan of attack would be:

Full tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air & fuel filters).
Replace O2 sensor.
Replace cat converter (most likely damaged/plugged from running rich).

Zwede is right, however if you want to pass and do the repairs later, alcohol will allow you to pass until you are ready to do the aforementioned work.

I just bought a 79 white/black and plan on registering it as a "Collectors Vehicle". Call the DMV (or whatever they call it now) at 888-486-3339 and they'll mail you an application. There is a 3000 mile restriction but other than that it seems like a bargain.

they have no way of checking to see if you only drive 3k miles a year, so don't worry about the restriction.
