I am having trouble keeping the plug wires from burning up.(to close to headers) Wires are 8.8mm and have a straight 4" long boot to the plugs. This boot is burning due to close proximity to the header. Any advice would be appreciated. Engine is 454ci. 1971 Wires are ACCEL :mad
I had the exact same problem. First of all, I tried every accell wire they make and every single one burned, even with boot protectors. My conclusion is that accell uses inferior boots.
My solution: Borg warner select wires. They are spiral core and the boots are high quality, unlike accell. I found them at pep boys of all places.
Then I got a set of boot protectors, the kind that slip over the boots made out of some fiberglass material.
I had the same problem with my Accel 8.8's ....until I bent them a little. Since the boots are straight, they ran too close to the headers. One actually arced and caused my engine to miss terribly. I got replacements from Jegs (not cheap) and bent them a bit to clear. Problem solved.
