Assembling the top half of the engine this afternoon. Well trying to. One of the coolant passage holes in the head gasket doesn't line up exactly on the block. The hole is off set about halfway. Is the normal? It's a 70 454 block, felpro gaskets, part # 1017-1.

Thanks

Jim

Jim,

Just pulled the heads off my 1974 LS-4 yesterday. It's the first time they have seen the light of day since orignal assembly back in 1974. My block (numbers matching) has the coolant passage in the same location as yours, but the original head gasket (steel) has the passage blocked off (no hole). I also have in hand the listed FelPro valve grind gasket set which is part # HS 8180 PT-5 and lists for every BB from '65 thru '79, and it has the passage blocked. Are you sure you didn't pick up a gasket set for a Gen V engine ("91 and up)? I haven't seen any of those apart, but they do have different coolant passages.

is there a mating hole in the head? if not, it's most likely not a problem although I'm not 100% certain. If the head is blind in that spot the only problem you will most likely have is corrosion of the head surface in that spot.

I double checked the part #s 7 1017-1 is correct for a 70 454. These came in a full gasket set, Felpro 2805 I think. Took one head back off, two bolts only finger tight, & there is a hole in the head that they line up with exactly. Must be that way from the factory, offset coolant passage holes.

Thanks guys - got it all bolted together, well the heads anyway :)

Pat IIRC a 70 454 is a Mark IV. Mark V is a newer block, 91 up I think.
