I just replaced the filter and pan gasket on my 76 Turbo 400. I still had it on jack-stands and was just having it idle while shifting into each gear. it did fine until i tried to shift from revers to park. it was grinding big time. it would grind and then go to park. any ideas? While i was doing this i don't have the half shafts on. could that have anything to do with it? other than that there is nothing else off right now. Any help is appreciated.
Was the driveshaft still turning when you went to park? If so it's just like the car was still in motion. The parking paw will grind instead of engaging.
Sounds like the parking paw slamming into it. were yo running hte car with the rear on jack stands? Hopefully you had the T arms at ride height to prevent damage to the Ujoints on the 1/2 shaft.

Thanks guys for the responses. After i posted i started to think and realized the same thing you guys said i couldn't stop the rotation of the trans because i had no brakes. well now i know and wont mess with it till i get the half-shafts in. thanks to all.
