My neighbor has a 79 with a hatch. The local corvette shop (corvette paramedics) looked at it on the lift and could'nt find where/how it had been retrofitted. They thought it had the rear from an 82 grafted on, but that apparently is not the case. It looks very stock.
Occasionally, you'll see a hatch kit -- still in the box -- for sale on ebay. These are basically the same as what GM installed on the '82CE, and the result will be a professional-looking hatch. (But like everything else on a C3, over time they'll start leaking.) Expect to pay $3000 or more.
:iagree: I researched this alot before looking for one for Fast81.
The kit was called the Hatchvette. It was marketed by Cars&Concepts (the same company that prototyped the 82CE hatch option). It was basically all the OEM pieces from the 82CE. The also sold the kit as a retrofit for 78-82 even thru Ecklers. Some dealerships even installed them before delivery as a special order!! You can still find them around. I bought one for my 81, but the D@MN moving company lost the hardware box so I'm left with only the original OEM never installed rear glass. Toying around with contacting the guy I bought it from since he had 2-3 more.
