Re: Crack in my windwshield....how much to replace? (TonyQT)
I had mine done about 2 yrs ago. They came out and removed the glass. Went away for 1 week while I cleaned up the channel and put in new molding clips, etc. They came back and installed the glass. About $200.
Just make sure you have the pillar and top trim ready to trial fit before the goop hardens. The glass needs to be set at the proper height off the frame channel or the trim will not lay down right......
The first time they laid the glass I told them I wanted to test fit the trim. They said "we are too busy today, it's going to be ok." I had them put it in writing on the sales receipt. Guess what - within 1/2 hour I was calling them back to have them reset the glass. They cracked it getting it raised. Their loss. This time they stayed until the trim was fit and they could move the glass down a little to make the trim nice level against the glass. You need to be able to fit the trim VERY QUICKLY before the goop hardens and they cannot move the glass.....

My insurance would not pay for it because it "looked like a stress crack and not road-hazard damage". SO go out there and use a ball-peen hammer to hit the crack before you let them look at it.

Recently left the Auto Glass Industry. If you want a correct fit do not use anything other than glass from either PPG or Pilkington. Pilkington is the old LOF who made the OEM glass and they have all the correct jigs and etc. Much of what is on the market today (particularly the cheap ones) are Chinese or maybe Mexican. They are not made to exact OEM specs and the problems mentioned earlier are very common. What doesn"t fit gets "adjusted" with urethane. A properly installed WS sould fit the first time, and after the proper cure time not leak.
Many folks do not know that they can tell their insurance Co. who they will use and require the Glass Co to use OEM level glass. My suggestion is to find a good local independent glass shop who will get you the glass you need. On a side note if you are doing a restore and want the "bug" (ID ) to be correct they can do that as well.
