Default Chrome alternator case switch

What's involved with pressing in/out the end bearing? Any special tools needed? I'm just looking over the job...haven't yet separated the two halfs of the old casing.

Man it’s been a long time since I split a GM alternator but I think a thin plate and 3 screws for each bearing hold them in. My alternator started clicking a while back and what I found is one of the screws missing and one backed out and hitting the rotating parts. After you take your old one off make a note on how it is clocked. When I bought my new replacement (to fix the above problem) I got it from a local parts store and it was clocked wrong. I had to separate the new one and turn the back case 180 degrees.

Are you thinking of getting the original housing chromed? If so, you may find it will cost a lot more than buying a replacment alternator that has a chrome case.

Opps sorry, I now see after posting you said SWITCH - never mind!

I bought a chrome casing for $40 vs. a new chrome alt for $110.

The "clocked" advise sounds like good advise. Thanks.

It was fairly easy. Getting the bearings in and out and getting the brushes situated was the only tough parts. I used a toothpick to hold back the brushes and then yanked it out the back after re-assembly. It really looks good.
